Have our County officials become tax farmers? What does this mean?
Property taxes are meant to reflect the true needs of government in exercising its appropriate responsibilities. Why do property taxes go up?
It might be because of inflation and increased costs to fulfill those government obligations.
OR, it might mean that government officials are caught up in some scheme which requires more than the ordinary amount of money, such as,
[The following are hypotheticals used for illustrative purposes only. This author is not making the claim that these are necessarily evidence of corrupt governance]
- A bigger airport so that rich people can land their private jets and make our county a playground;
- A fancy golf course, so that sedentary rich people can play without hiking into the mountains to hunt;
- A resort on the St. Joe River like the Coeur d’ Alene Casino, which would be broke, were it not a playground for what would otherwise and elsewhere be considered criminal activity.
[Tourism that caters to the decadent rich opens the door to boondoggles and outside interference in the priorities of local government.]
OR, it might mean that the county assessor is doing his job too efficiently. With better surveillance techniques (see below), he is finding, assessing, and taxing people hiding in the woods.
BUT, it is not so the rest of us will get tax relief. It just grows the cornucopia so that the Commissioners can increase spending on behalf of their voter base.
It is the way of the Metrocrat.

Carpenters, stand up for your 2nd Amendment rights to own and discharge a nail-gun! Is it true that a permit is required to use a nail gun in Benewah County, and a failure to obtain one can land you in jail?
Read this review of Benewah County’s infamous Building Ordinance #2013-135 that created our very own “Deep State“:
Go to 8-1-1-D of #2013-135 for the Penalty Section, where it is declared to be a misdemeanor and “Each day . . . shall be considered a separate offense.” A misdemeanor requires jailing in the county jail for up to six months.
The Ordinance also contains an invitation to vigilantism and thuggery: “Nothing herein contained shall prevent the county commissioners or any other public official(s) or private citizen(s) from taking such lawful action as is necessary to restrain or prevent any violation of this section.”
Will my neighbors be allowed now to appear on my doorstep with torches to burn down my home because I didn’t secure proper permits?

Do you like living in Zoneinstan?*
The Courts tell us that zoning and building codes come from the “police power” of your local government. Do you like living in a police state?
There are three essential features of a police state: 1) surveillance, 2) classification, and 3) control.
Surveillance is achieved through the county assessor’s office and various building inspectors. Classification is the work of the zoning & planning board. Control comes through the board of county commissioners and the county prosecutor through the threat of fines and criminal penalties.
County Commissioners are called “commissioners” because they have been given a “commission” by the People. They swear an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the State of Idaho. Those documents require that they protect your natural rights given to you by God, not attack your rights.
Our County Commissioners should be called “County Commissars” because they do not honor your property rights.
